Dan Jones, Dr Suzannah Lipscomb and Rob Bell tell the glorious and gory story of London’s 2000-year history, from uninhabited swamp to modern megacity. In the opening episode, the three presenters investigate London’s first 1000 years, looking for evidence and remains of the ancient city. Dan Jones goes behind the scenes of engineering super-project Crossrail to examine the extraordinary treasures which have been unearthed by their giant tunnelling machines, and heads underground to discover the ruins of Roman Londinium, preserved in some very surprising locations. Suzannah Lipscomb gets to know Boudica, the fearsome warrior queen who burnt the city to the ground, and deciphers handwritten messages written almost 2000 years ago by the very first Roman Londoners. Meanwhile Rob Bell investigates the engineering genius behind the very first London Bridge, built by the Romans but ransacked by the Vikings 800 years later in a dramatic siege. Rob also heads to Kent on a mission to find the answers to a long unsolved mystery about the Roman Wall. Finally, Dan Jones visits the Tower of London to marvel at the White Tower, built by William Conqueror to dominate the city, like an eleventh-century Shard only garrisoned with Norman soldiers, and designed to terrify native Londoners into submission.
