ZDF is 2004 Market Leader in German Prime Time
The viewers' favourite broadcaster in 10 genres
In 2004 ZDF recorded a market share of 13.8 % among German television viewers, putting it in second place along with RTL (also on 13.8 %). ZDF was the only German broadcaster in the top 4 to record an increase in viewing figures over the previous year, while ARD, RTL and Sat.1 saw their shares decline. And in prime time viewing ZDF is the market leader with a share of 15.9 %.
This year again saw certain programs enjoying particular popularity, including the Friday and Saturday evening thriller series (e. g. "Leipzig Homicide" and "The Old Fox"), the successful entertainment feature "Wanna Bet..?" and the TV film versions of Rosamunde Pilcher's novels. The licensing rights for these productions are marketed by ZDF Enterprises.
The 2004 image survey also saw ZDF achieving success with German viewers. ZDF was regarded as the most accessible and the friendliest broadcaster, with emotional characteristics such as entertaining, varied, modern and lively. ZDF also came first among all German broadcasters in the genres family and entertainment series, talkshows, documentaries, science, culture, nature and wildlife programs. In the sections cinema and television films, entertainment shows, folk music and pop music ZDF was considered the broadcaster with the best programs available.
ZDF is most highly valued among all stations for informative content, truthfulness and program standards. From the perspective of the viewers, the comparison with private broadcasters could hardly be more clear: on these criteria ZDF scores on average 30 percentage points better than such stations.
