ZDF Enterprises will be international distributor of "Titanic" documentary special
Super-doc ready for centennial of Titanic disaster
Mainz, 17 May 2011.
International distributor of top-quality television programming ZDF Enterprises has just signed a co-production agreement with the international acclaimed production companies Tile Films, Ireland and Gebrüder Beetz Filmproduktion, Germany for "Saving the Titanic" (1 x 90' / 2 x 50' HD), the first-ever documentary special to focus on the engineers below deck, the men who gave their best – and their lives – in a futile attempt to save the stricken ship.
Available on time for the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking on 14 April 2012, "Saving the Titanic" is a poignant story of self-sacrifice and dignity in the face of impending death. Seeking to answer the question of what happened in the engine rooms after the collision, the film relates the story of the Titanic for the first time from below deck, among the huge furnaces and massive dynamos. Basing itself on eye-witness accounts, the film focuses on six main characters from the team of engineers, thus creating strong emotional bonds with the viewers.
The program has a production budget of over 1.6 million Euros and will feature large-scale, high-end re-enactments with English-language actors, and a generous use of CGI to help bring to life the last hours of the "unsinkable" Titanic. The "super-doc" is scheduled for production in Dublin during summer 2011 and will be available for delivery by January 2012 at the latest. Gebrüder Beetz Filmproduktion is a renowned Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne documentary film company known for its cross-media formats and acclaimed primetime programs on, for example, pioneers who became millionaires and 100 Years of Hollywood. Tile Films is the internationally acclaimed Irish production company specialising in innovative, HD high end drama-docs, documentaries and series about people, history, religion, art, culture, natural history and travel. The company was founded in 1989 by Stephen Rooke, one of Ireland's leading documentary filmmakers.
This exciting Irish / German co-production is being funded by ZDF Enterprises, Arte, RTÉ, Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and The Irish Film Board.
