ZDF Enterprises sells two new Scandinavian crime series to BBC Four
“The Bridge” and “Sebastian Bergman” to air on BBC Four in 2012
Cannes/Mainz, 3rd October 2011
Announced today at MIPCOM, BBC Four have acquired “The Bridge” (10x60’ or 5x110’, HD) and “Sebastian Bergman” (2x100’, HD), two new foreign language series from ZDF Enterprises. The series will air on BBC Four in 2012.
Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition says: “Both “The Bridge” and “Sebastian Bergman” are character-based, suspense-filled murder mysteries, with a cinematic atmosphere and style. Following in footsteps of Spiral, Wallander and “The Killing”, they are outstanding additions to BBC Four's slate of European crime drama”.
Alexander Coridass, President and CEO of ZDF Enterprises, adds: “This new contract proves that programs from continental Europe have an audience in the English-speaking market. BBC Four celebrated enormous success among viewers and critics alike with "The Killing" - despite being broadcast in Danish, the original language, with English subtitles. I am sure that BBC Four will be able to follow up this success with "The Bridge" and "Sebastian Bergman"”.
“The Bridge”, a ten part investigative crime drama , begins when the body of a woman is found in the middle of the Øresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark. A bi-national team is put together to solve the crime and the killer, always one step ahead of the police, becomes the object of a dramatic manhunt. The Bridge is a Danish/Swedish co-production.
“Sebastian Bergman”,a compelling new police thriller, stars Rolf Lassgård, one of Scandinavia's most popular actors (Wallander, Beck),in a powerful new role as profiler Sebastian Bergman. Strong-headed, politically incorrect, abrasive and grief-stricken, Bergman has still not come to terms with the loss of both his wife and daughter in the 2004 Thailand tsunami. In the first of the two thrillers, he helps police in his home town solve the murder of a 15-year-old boy. In the second, he attempts to catch a serial killer who seems to be modelling his attacks on those of a jailed killer whom Bergman brought behind bars himself.
The 2 x 100 mins films are from the creators of the TV movie cycle based on Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander novels.
