ZDF Enterprises sells Canal+ series "Crematorio" to Sky
Award-winning series to be aired on Sky Atlantic HD
Mainz, 7th February 2013
ZDF Enterprises has sold the Spanish TV series “Crematorio” to Sky Deutschland, where it is aired on Monday nights at 10 pm by Sky Atlantic HD. Based on the book by Rafael Chirbes (awarded the “Premio Nacional de la Crítica 2008”), the internationally successful series was originally produced by Mod Producciones on behalf of Canal+ and awarded the “Premio Ondas” and the “Premio de la Crítica” at the FesTVal of Vitoria (Spain) in 2011 as best Spanish TV series. The cast’s compelling achievements were also repeatedly honored. In 2012 Alicia Borrachero won the Spanish Screen Actors Gild Award as best lead actress, and Juana Acosta as best female supporting role.
The series, which is also shown on HBO Latin America, for example, relates in epic scenes not only the story of the Bertomeu family, but also the rise and fall of the old order, the decline of the “old days,” the conflict between guilt and redemption. In Misent, a fictitious city on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, the building contractor Rubén Bertomeu has founded and built up a construction empire over the decades. His profitable range of designs – which is partly why Spain’s coasts look the way they do – stands on its own shaky basis of dirty deals, corruption, personal dependencies and simple violence. His empire begins to collapse when the times change. The patriarch and his clan – who are either on his side or on their own – defend themselves each in their own way. Corruption and greed, values and virtues – what remains in the end?
