ZDF Enterprises secures worldwide distribution of ZDF/BBC co-production ‘The Celts: Blood, Iron & Sacrifice’

Mainz, 10th August 2016

ZDF Enterprises has announced that it will be responsible for worldwide distribution of ‘The Celts: Blood, Iron & Sacrifice’ (3x50'), the documentary produced by Gruppe 5 for BBC, ZDF/arte and ZDF Enterprises. The presenterless version will also be completed before MIPCOM 2016 in October.

The three-part documentary examines the life and work of the tribes, who were called “Celts” or “Gauls” by their enemies and whose homelands spanned from Spain, England and France to Slovenia and Anatolia. They greatly influenced the history of Europe for almost a thousand years and kept Rome ever watchful. Today, new archaeological findings paint a much more precise picture of them.

In the 1st century B.C., Europe was firmly in the hands of the Celts. And when they began to cross the Alps, this was perceived as an affront to the upstart superpower Rome. Caesar even marched into Gaul to subjugate all of the Celtic tribes. Nevertheless, the Celt Vercingetorix united the tribes against the Romans in a conflict that lasted seven years. His captivity sealed the fate of the free Celts on the continent. The Roman army finally turned its attention to Britain, an island rich in resources with powerful tribes and druids, and advanced military equipment.

The last episode tells the story of the Celts’ last stand against the Roman army led by another great leader, the warrior Queen Boudicca. The Romans beat the Celts devastatingly. As a consequence, the Celts submitted to Roman rule. Interestingly enough, however, parts of their culture have survived in Scotland, England, Ireland and Brittany even until today.
