ZDF Enterprises picks the international sales rights to SVT-Nice Drama Scandi-noir series ”Thicker Than Water”
Sweden’s latest TV-drama-hit « Thicker Than Water », a dark 10 x one-hour primetime family chronicle set in the Stockholm’s archipelago, is produced by Nice Drama for SVT and YLE
Stockholm and Mainz, 20th March 2014
World-renowned for its fruitful collaboration with Scandinavian broadcasters in the field of crime thrillers and for its active role in establishing the popularity of Scandinavian “noir” around the world, ZDF Enterprises is now expanding its thematic range to include a drama series, with storylines focusing not on crime and killers, but on domestic dysfunction.
“Thicker Than Water”, a series produced by Nice Drama, one of Sweden’s leading producers and part of nice entertainment group’s pan-scandinavian group of companies, tells the story of an ageing mother who gathers her three conflicted children around her in her idyllic B&B on the Swedish coast, knowing that she is about to die. When the moment comes, her testament is read, and the siblings can’t believe what they hear: They can only inherit anything at all if they join forces to run the B&B together for one entire season.
“Thicker Than Water”, created by producer-writer Henrik Jansson-Schweizer, penned by Niklas Rockström and Morgan Jensen, and directed by Erik Leijonborg, Anders Engström and Molly Hartleb, is a Swedish-Finnish co-production, featuring a cast of some of Sweden’s and Finland’s brightest rising stars. The series achieved an average share of 29% in SVT’s drama primetime slot, mondays at 21.00 earlier this year. It has been hailed by Swedish press as a fresh and dark reboot of the so-called archipelago drama genre, a genre invented in Scandinavia almost 40 years ago.
”We are really in unknown territory here, with a rather dark story set in the idyllic backdrop of the Åland’s archipelago in summertime”, says Patrick Nebout, executive producer of the show at Nice Drama. ”Audiences have completely embraced the story and its fascinating characters from the very first episode, and validated the show’s edgy undertones. We’re thrilled to have ZDF Enterprises as a international distribution partner on this very particular and exciting drama”.
Fred Burcksen, ZDF Enterprises’ Executive Vice President and COO:”“Thicker Than Water” is the first Swedish family drama program in our catalogue. In view of our longstanding experience in the successful marketing of Scandinavian product, we are proud to be in charge of the worldwide distribution rights for this series including remake and format rights, with the exception of a few Scandinavian rights.”
