ZDF Enterprises Enjoys Success with MIPCOM Highlights
'Scooter: Secret Agent' is Best-selling Program
Mainz / Germany, 15th October 2004
The high expectations with which ZDF Enterprises journeyed to MIPCOM, the television trade fair that has just come to a close, were in fact exceeded by actual events, the ZDF marketing subsidiary announced today.
ZDF Enterprises had opted to concentrate on children's programs, with four new series being presented at this year's MIPCOM. And in the view of Alexander Coridass, President and CEO of the Mainz-based company: "It proved to be a wise decision. The high-quality, entertaining children's programs we can offer are precisely what our customers want. 44% of our total turnover at this market was based on children's features, with the highlight of our presentation, the live action series 'Scooter: Secret Agent', doing particularly well." Other successful productions in this genre included 'Wicked Science', 'Toupou' and 'Dragon, My Funny Friend'. At MIPCOM Junior, the fair for children's programs that preceded MIPCOM, 'Dragon, My Funny Friend' was the third most frequently screened program of all 800 programs on show.
In addition, a co-production deal was finalised for new episodes of the successful series 'Bibi Blocksberg'. This production has been broadcast on both ZDF and the Children's Channel KiKa with very good audience ratings, and it has just received the MIPCOM DVD Award for the best non-English series.
In program sales, suspense and action proved to be particularly popular: the main successes here were the thriller series 'Siska' and new episodes of the successful series 'Air Rescue Team'.
Contemporary documentaries were the third genre to enjoy special success.
Productions such as 'The War of the Century', 'They Wanted to Kill Hitler', 'The SS', and 'The Nazi Expeditions' attracted significant interest. The sale of several documentary features on contemporary history to an Israeli broadcaster in the form of the series 'Hitler's Children', 'Medicine in the Third Reich', 'The SS' and 'Schleich's Restaurant' is particularly remarkable. Just a few years ago the Guido Knopp production 'Holokaust' was shown in Israel to considerable acclaim, the broadcaster has also signed a renewal for this series at MIPCOM. According to Alexander Coridass, this sale is an indication of the high degree of international recognition accorded to ZDF, in particular with regard to the most difficult of subjects.
MIPCOM 2004 saw ZDF programs generating most interest in French-speaking countries worldwide. 35% of total sales were to these territories, followed by German-speaking lands with 28% and Italian areas with 18%.
