ZDF Enterprises coproduces "Jack Taylor" films based on award-winning crime novels by Ken Bruen
Mainz, 24th January 2011
ZDF Enterprises is coproducing the film adaptations of the award-winning "Jack Taylor" crime novels by Ken Bruen and will also be handling the distribution rights in Continental Europe. The films "The Magdalen Martyrs" and "The Pikemen" are currently in production.
Irish author Ken Bruen is a specialist of dark, socio-critical crime novels. He is regarded as an eminent representative of the "Irish Noir" genre, and deals with topics such as the clash of religious traditions, archaic rites and modern-day society. His stories are about fear and crimes that cannot be solved solely through rational means of investigation and evidence-based police work. His hero, Jack Taylor, is a charismatic private detective, and a fascinating, multi-faceted character. In his crime cycle, Ken Bruen depicts his native Galway and its population with unvarnished openness as well as with tenderness. Jack Taylor is a sensitive and broken hero, whose rough facade hides a cultured soul who likes to quote the classics and has trouble masking his compassion and vulnerability. The casting of this character with Iain Glen ("Game of Thrones," "Lara Croft") guarantees that this will be a very special "film noir" project that will cast its spell on viewers everywhere.
Ken Bruen's works have won many international awards, such as the Shamus Award in the category Best Novel for "The Guards" in 2004, the Macavity Award as Best Novel for "The Killing of the Tinkers" in 2005, the Barry Award and the Shamus Award for "Priest" and "The Dramatist" in 2007, the "Grand Prix de littérature policière" for "Priest" in 2009, and the Deutscher Krimipreis as well as the Macavity Award for "The Guards" and "Tower" in 2010.
Dr. Alexander Coridass, CEO Program and Marketing of ZDF Enterprises, proudly asserts: "We are delighted to be participating in the production of the 'Jack Taylor' cycle as European distribution partners. The finely crafted adaptations of the internationally successful Ken Bruen novels add a special note to the ZDF Enterprises catalogue. They're powerful stories with a charming, rough-edged private detective who investigates suspenseful cases on the West-Irish coast. The lead role is cast with renowned actor Iain Glen. And the production values are top notch. Three reasons that ensure the success of this high-quality format throughout Europe."
