ZDF Enterprises coproduces BLOCKBUSTAZ sitcom and takes over worldwide distribution
Mainz, 13th September 2016
ZDFE.entertainment, the division of ZDF Enterprises responsible for format marketing, has now added the successful BLOCKBUSTAZ (6x30’, another series is in production) sitcom to its catalogue. Rights to both the format and episodes already produced are available for purchase.
BLOCKBUSTAZ is a quirky sitcom that tells the story of a special microcosm: a ten-story block of concrete flats in one of Cologne’s less desirable neighbourhoods. Based on the work of lead screenwriter Niklas Hoffmann, experienced comedy director Jan Markus Linhof once again demonstrates his strength for situation comedy and keen sense of timing. Humorous and entertaining, it details the smaller and larger everyday problems encountered by its curious antiheroes.
BLOCKBUSTAZ tells the story of Sol Berger, played by rapper Eko Fresh, who has been living at home with his single mother, Madita, since childhood. Other characters on his block include his adorable girlfriend, Jessica (Joyce Ilg), his chaotic best friend, Hardy (Sascha Reimann aka. Ferris MC and rapper with the band „Deichkind“), and the strict caretaker, Mr Bulut. Up until now, Sol has been living as an amateur MC, unemployed but happy, waiting for things to really take off for him. That is until his mother unceremoniously kicks him out on his 30th birthday. Hopeless losers and criminal ghetto kids – that might be how the so-called middle classes refer to them, but that doesn’t matter to the BLOCKBUSTAZ. They are friends, they are family, and they won’t be beaten. And when something goes wrong, they just get on and deal with it – in their own way, of course.
BLOCKBUSTAZ was chosen as one of the winners of TVLab 2014 and the series was launched in 2016, achieving significantly above-average viewing figures for the channel. The series also features guest appearances from Moritz Bleibtrei, Frederick Lau, Leslie Malton, Jürgen Drews, Hans Sarpei and rappers Rapper Celo & Abdi. Studio Hamburg Enterprises has published the accompanying DVD in German-speaking territories.
Sylvia Brucker, Vice President ZDFE.entertainment: “BLOCKBUSTAZ is definitely something that works very well not just in Germany, but every country that has a hip hop culture. The themes covered in this series are relevant not just in a big city like Cologne, but Parisian suburbs, the Bronx of New York, or the Scampia in Naples.”
