ZDF Enterprises coproduces and takes on global distribution for Impossible Factual’s “WW II – Battles for Europe”
Mainz, 26th November 2018
ZDF Enterprises coproduces the documentary series “WW II – Battles for Europe” (8 x 50′) and will also be responsible for its global distribution. The series is still in production.
The series depicts the decisive phase of World War II on the Western Front – from D-Day to the Allies’ crossing of the Rhine – and is the ideal programme for the upcoming 75th anniversary of D-Day in June 2019.
Produced by Impossible Factual, Jonathan Drake’s renowned London-based TV production company (known for “T-Rex Autopsy” and “Mummies Alive”, as well as productions for ZDF, the Discovery Channel, History UK, History Canada, Pro7, eONE and others), “WW II – Battles for Europe” offers impressive eyewitness accounts and interviews with US-American, British, Canadian and German veterans as well as some very rare archive material. Top international experts classify the events in terms of their human and historical significance, while graphic representations explain how the war played out at that time.
The Allied landing off Normandy on D-Day. The ill-fated air war over Arnhem. The counter-offensive of the German Wehrmacht in the Ardennes. The race for one of the last intact Rhine bridges in Remagen. These famous underlying battles on the Western Front of World War II have almost attained cult status in military history today.
The extremely thoroughly researched individual episodes show how fragile the circumstances of a battle can be; how the unpredictable influences of the weather, topography, communication, provisions, fatigue, troop morale and the unexpected actions of the enemy can turn the tide in one way or another.
Throughout the series, its creators repeatedly point out that these “key battles” by no means constitute the entire war. No documentary series would be able to present the entire history of World War II – a history that’s rife with victories, defeats, miracles and catastrophes. The aim of “WW II – Battles for Europe” is to use the individual battles to create a blueprint of one of humanity’s greatest tragedies in words and pictures, and to show how ordinary people were often caught up in it again and again over a very long period of time.
