ZDF Enterprises and Skyworks Co-operate on Spectacular Iron Curtain Project
ZDF.archive markets exclusive HD aerial footage of the formal border between East and West Germany
ZDF Enterprises and Skyworks, the British specialist on HD aerial photography, are working together to produce exclusive HD aerial footage of the border which used to exist between East and West Germany. Also included in the team is the well-known German expert on aerial image archaeology Klaus Leidorf, who has captured the border on film a number of times before.
Using the best material now available and a special HD camera suspended beneath a helicopter, it has now been possible to capture exclusive images, never before filmed or seen, of the former Iron Curtain from a bird's eye perspective. From the sky it certainly is a stunning picture: a green band a kilometre wide, full of lavish vegetation and inhabited by rare animal and plant life, undisturbed by civilisation.
However, at the same time it is a striking image of a country divided. Forests, villages, streets and railways - literally cut in half. This was the site of the most monstrous construction mankind has ever built: the Iron Curtain as rendered all too visible by the concrete border between East and West Germany. A strip of no man's land 1400 kilometres long, with minefields and over 400 guard towers, up to 5 kilometres wide in places, watched over by 5000 troops of the East German border guard division. A structure which claimed the lives of 1000 people and cost the East German government €500 million a year to maintain.
These spectacular HD aerial images of the formal border between East and West, the like of which have never been seen before, bear witness to a stunning aspect of contemporary history and culture. The footage will be used in various ZDF/ZDF Enterprises programs which are present in production, including the five-part documentary series "Crossing the Border (working title)" featuring the eminent animal film-maker Andreas Kieling, four episodes of "ZDF Environment on the Move" dealing with this environmental phenomenon, and a documentary made by the ZDF Department of Contemporary History.
However, this extraordinary material will also be marketed as footage by ZDF.archive in German-speaking countries on an exclusive basis.
