ZDF Enterprises and KiKA continue their successful collaboration
ZDF Enterprises is awarded an extension of its distribution mandate as general agency
Mainz, 16th April 2018
Since 2012, as the general agency, ZDF Enterprises has looked after the ARD and ZDF children's channel, as well as representing the global marketing rights to all productions to which KiKA holds the rights. In 2015, the preschool brand KiKANiNCHEN was also included in the mandate. Following an EU-wide public invitation to tender last year, ZDF Enterprises has now been awarded a four-year extension of its mandate. The partners look forward to continuing their long-standing and faithful collaboration. They plan to expand their high-quality licensing programme further, to reinforce the umbrella brand and to focus on international TV sales and distribution.
As well as the KiKA umbrella brand, ZDF Enterprises' mandate also includes outstanding KiKA programme brands, such as Baumhaus, Bernd das Brot, ENE MENE BU, KiKANiNCHEN, KIKA LIVE, TanzAlarm and many more. Complemented by the many new incentives, the high profile and great popularity of the children's channel and of its programmes offer ideal conditions for high-quality product concepts.
KiKA continually achieves top ratings and regularly leaves the competition in its wake in the field of German children's media. In the target group of three to 13-year-olds, the broadcaster achieved a market share of 18.3% in 2017, putting it neck and neck with SUPER RTL. For several years in a row, KiKA has also led the preschool children's market, its most recent market share being 28.1% (source: AGF/GfK).
Fred Burcksen, President and CEO of ZDF Enterprises, said: "We are delighted about the continuation of the KiKA mandate, and the trust in our work which this demonstrates. KiKA's first-class programme brands are a perfect complement to ZDF Enterprises' portfolio of outstanding children's programmes."
Since 1 January 1997, the ARD and ZDF children's channel has been offering a mix of entertaining, advisory, educational and informational programmes in different genres and on a variety of topics. KiKA offers quality and variety to young media users between the ages of three and 13, whilst at the same time giving guidance and advice to parents and educators alike. As well as entertainment and fun, KiKA's public remit also includes providing education and information, imparting values and promoting media literacy. KiKA is also advertising-free. In addition, it offers great diversity, with every genre represented: series, feature films, magazines, documentaries, information programmes, news, quizzes, shows, specials and themed days, original productions, numerous premières and classic children's programmes from ARD and ZDF. KiKA offers programmes for a whole range of different needs, as reflected by its targeted programming: Kikaninchen greets the youngest viewers in the morning time slot of the same name from 6.00 am to 10.15 am, while pre-teen viewers can enjoy the early-afternoon programmes, especially the drama series. The children's prime-time late-afternoon slot ends at 7.00 pm, and the evening schedule starts at 7.25 pm on the dot. This slot offers information programmes, children's news, original magazine and event formats, or cult series and feature films for older children. The range of programmes is perfectly complemented by the KiKA website: www.kika.de . The KiKA schedule starts at 6.00 am and finishes at 9.00 pm every day.
In 2017, the ARD and ZDF children's channel celebrated its 20th anniversary and came up with a diverse range of programmes, innovative campaigns and new programme-related services. The dialogue with viewers and their parents has also been significantly influenced by a new Facebook presence, the relaunch of the preschool children's website kikaninchen.de and creation of the first cost-free KiKANiNCHEN app. Parents and children alike responded very positively to these developments, once again making KiKA the most popular German children's channel in 2017. According to a representative survey conducted by iconkids & youth in September 2017, approximately 60% of all six to 13-year-olds and 90% of mothers of three to five-year-olds awarded top grades to the children's channel and its programme range.
