ZDF Enterprises and Fuji TV to co-produce soccer drama series THE WINDOW
Thrilling prime time drama series is first ever European-Japanese scripted co-production
13th June 2018
ZDF Enterprises will co-produce and internationally distribute the suspenseful 10 x 60’ drama series THE WINDOW. Created and written by British screenwriter James Payne (The Musketeers, Hooten & the Lady, Mr. Selfridge), THE WINDOW has been developed by Berlin-based production company Boogie Entertainment and is coproduced by Japanese Fuji TV and Panenka alongside Belga-Films in Belgium.
THE WINDOW is a one hour prime time drama series, with a strong thriller element, centred on the multi-billion dollar business surrounding the elite world of soccer. Focusing on an ensemble cast of players, agents, club owners, administrators and journalists, the series explores the off-field machinations of the beautiful game.
The series begins at the end of the English soccer season. The champions have been crowned, relegated teams drop down a division, and the transfer window opens... Across ten episodes THE WINDOW charts ten tense weeks in the life of Jordan Burdett, a humble 17 year old Wunderkind who finds himself on the wish list of every major club in Europe.
What starts out as a tug of war over a young lad’s first professional contract becomes entwined with a bigger, darker, criminal conspiracy. With multi-billion dollar broadcasting rights up for auction soccer’s money men are set on a collision course with the game’s governing bodies.
Robert Franke, VP ZDFE.drama for ZDF Enterprises: “THE WINDOW is a thrilling human drama that does for football what House of Cards did for politics. A unique blend of the Machiavellian horizontal storylines of shows like Game of Thrones, and compelling character-driven series like Billions, where moral right and wrong blurs along the lines of ambition and willingness to do whatever it takes to succeed.”
Taka Hayakawa, Director for worldwide production and business development of FUJI Television Network, added: “Think about it; how many drama series can you recall from last year? One? Possibly two? It’s evident that recent dramas are disposable, which is to say that it isn’t entertaining enough. With hopes of making a captivating drama series, we are making a special drama on “football and power”, applying the creativeness of both Asia and Europe. I am confident to state that this new drama series will be the best in 2019.”
Creator James Payne said: “It's thrilling and fitting to be working with world class producers on a drama about the global game. Like many fans, I’m glued to my phone in the summer months, following the sagas of the transfer window. But behind every headline is a high-stakes human story; and for some to seal the deal is the real game.”
