The Einstein Year on ZDF
The Einstein-Year on ZDF
ZDF celebrates 100 years of the theory of relativity and 50 years since the death of the world-famous scientist.
100 years of the theory of relativity: 2005 is the Einstein Year! An occasion that is definitely not to be missed. It has been clear for a long time that Albert Einstein would have to become a theme of ZDF programming this year: the likeable scientist, the original crazy professor - who was at the same time as sharp as the proverbial knife.
During his lifetime he was not very interested in public appearances and awards – although he did use his fame to exert influence when he felt it appropriate. “Every squeak I make is turned into a trumpet solo!” he remarked of the attention he received, which he felt was exaggerated. When a film producer approached him with the intention of making a movie about him, he dismissed the idea as a “curious scheme”. He felt his private life was “incredibly banal – at least in terms of the requirements for a project of that sort”. And Einstein reserved his harshest criticism for the idea that his scientific work could be made the subject of a film: "A theory can’t be introduced to the layman as if by magic, using pictures!”
In the programs to mark this occasion ZDF is planning to shed new light on some aspects of Einstein’s life and to reveal others for the first time. And we shall not shy away from attempting to convey to the viewers something of Einstein’s scientific achievement, particularly as regards its relevance for today. One of our writers found he could overcome his hesitation about confronting the theory of relativity when he came across the following quotation from the great man, which struck a chord with him as well: "I have no particular talent – I’m just passionately interested in things”. This range of programs aims to surmount obstacles and bring a number of surprising facts to light, augmented by an extensive range of online features.
The Einstein myth continues to this day. The ZDF features are based on the desire to examine this myth from various perspectives. And naturally the significance of the Einstein Year will be marked in regular programs as well as special features. For instance, in his programs Joachim Bublath will study the significance of Einstein’s theories for our view of the modern world from a wide range of angles. In addition, ZDF will broadcast comprehensive coverage of the outstanding events planned for the jubilee year. To quote Einstein once again: “Do I find it ridiculous that the masses get so worked up about my theory? I’m sure it is the mystery of non-comprehension that attracts them so much.” The programs will indicate the other factors that create the Einstein myth, even 100 years after the theory of relativity was first proposed.
