SVT and ZDF Enterprises sign international distribution deal for Death of a Pilgrim
Stockholm and Mainz, 13th February 2013
SVT, Sweden’s public service broadcaster, and ZDF Enterprises have signed an agreement regarding the international distribution of the four episode TV-series Death of a Pilgrim.
Death of a Pilgrim covers the assassination of the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986. It is based on author Leif GW Persson's award-winning trilogy The death of a welfare state. The series stars Rolf Lassgård (known for his role as 'Kurt Wallander') and Helena af Sandeberg.
The story centers on the head of the national crime unit, Lars Martin Johansson -”LMJ” - played by Rolf Lassgård. He is frustrated that the Palme assassination was never solved. Could he have prevented the killing if he'd acted differently back then? He gets the opportunity to start an investigation that runs parallel to the regular Palme investigation and hand-picks a team of people that he feels can help him see the case in a new light.
His first recruit is Jeanette Eriksson (Helena af Sandeberg), who has been with the force for 25 years and may well be the colleague that LMJ holds in the highest of respect. Several of the team members might have knowledge about the assassination that they aren’t even aware of themselves. Someone must have seen or heard something that might be the key to solving the case. The story is played out both in the present day, and in the weeks before Palme was assassinated.
The series was directed by Kristoffer Nyholm and Kristian Petri. Written by Sara Heldt and Johan Widerberg, and produced by Maria Nordenberg. Other notable cast members are Jonas Karlsson, Claes Malmberg, Jakob Ericksson, Ellen Jelinek, Kjell Bergqvist, Lars-Erik Berenett and Johannes Brost.
Death of a Pilgrim premiered on SVT1 on Sunday, January 13th, reaching an audience of over 1.8 million viewers, and a viewer share of 50%. It is a co-production between DR, NRK, YLE and Chimney Pot with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond and the Nordvision Fund.
Alexander Coridass, President and CEO of ZDF Enterprises: “We have a long-standing experience in worldwide distribution of Scandinavian crime programs and are convinced that we’ll be able to help make Death of a Pilgrim another international hit. We are pleased to add yet another suspenseful title to our impressive catalogue.”
