KiKA zooms in on Q Pootle 5

London and Mainz, 4th February 2014

ZDF Enterprises has signed a deal with the German free-to-air children’s channel KiKA for the acquisition of pre-school series Q Pootle 5 (52 x 11’), produced in the UK by Snapper Productions.

Based on the best-selling books by hugely popular children’s author and illustrator Nick Butterworth, the series follows the adventures of the friendly little alien Q Pootle 5 and his friends, Oopsy, Eddi, Stella, Ray, Groobie, Bud-D and Planet Dave as they tackle the everyday problems of the final frontier.

Commenting on the deal, Ben Butterworth, Snapper Productions, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the positive response to Q Pootle 5 and its ever-growing popularity both in the UK and internationally. We are thrilled that Q Pootle 5 and his friends have found their way to Germany and we couldn’t wish for a better home for the series than KiKA.

Sebastian Debertin, KiKA’s Head of Fiction + Acquisitions adds: "Q Pootle 5 is a beautifully animated series with a lovely bunch of great characters, created by top kids author Nick Butterworth, bringing truly entertaining stories to KiKA screens!"

Oliver Grundel, Director ZDFE.junior at ZDF Enterprises: “We are delighted to have found the ideal home in Germany for our little friend Q Pootle 5. KiKA now joins the ranks of the high-caliber broadcast partners for this pre-school highlight”.

Q Pootle 5 launched last year on CBeebies in the UK and quickly became one of the channel’s highest rated programmes. In just 62 episodes, it reached over 4 million people, with one in every five children in the UK having watched the show to-date. The series performs strongly across all key demographics and particularly well among children aged 4-6. In addition, Rocket Licensing, which is managing the UK licensing campaign for the series, has already signed a number of licensees for the brand. They include Walker Books for global TV tie-in publishing, Blue Sky Designs for children’s stationery, Immediate Media for slots in CBeebies Weekly and Toybox magazines, Egmont for standalone magazines, Jumbo for games and puzzles, VMC for accessories and Rainbow Productions for character costumes.

The series has also been sold to ABC in Australia where it airs on ABC4Kids. Other territories are being negotiated and are expected to be announced shortly.

Q Pootle 5 (52 x 11’) is produced by Snapper Productions and animated by BAFTA-award-winning studio Blue Zoo.
