German premiere of ZDF Enterprises acquisition "Zulu"
Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitaker star in the leading roles of the post-Apartheid thriller by director Jérôme Salle
Mainz, 8th May 2014
The German premiere of "Zulu", the first joint movie project of ZDF Enterprises and Studio Hamburg Enterprises, was held in Hamburg on 5th May 2014 and was attended by director Jérôme Salle and lead actor Orlando Bloom. The movie will be in cinemas throughout Germany as of today with the theatrical distribution being handled by Studio Hamburg Enterprises.
With the purchase of the rights to “Zulu”, ZDF Enterprises follows its strategy to acquire top-class international films at an early stage. ZDF Enterprises, together with German Pubcaster ZDF who will air the movie in prime time, took the decision for the project based on the screenplay only. The fact that the movie was selected the closing film of the 66th Cannes Film Festival a year ago, proved the decision to be right.
The story of the post-Apartheid thriller, “Zulu”, takes place in Cape Town, South Africa, in the "Rainbow Nation" still grappling with grotesque inequality and crushing poverty. Two policemen, Orlando Bloom ("Pirates of the Caribbean", "Lord of the Rings") and Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker ("The Last King of Scotland", "Ghost Dog"), are investigating a murder in the South African drug scene, which turns out to be a crime on an international level… "Zulu" is a social drama, expressive action cinema and, moreover, a highly charged cinematic portrayal of the reality of life in South Africa. It also serves as a turning point in the career of Orlando Bloom; it is the first film in which he plays a macho and action hero.
"Zulu" is directed by Jérôme Salle (“Largo Winch - The Heir Apparent”). The film, based on the novel of the same name by French author Caryl Férey, skillfully combines elements of film noir and social drama. It was filmed entirely on location in South Africa. The screenplay of "Zulu" was written by Julien Rappeneau and producer Richard Grandpierre (Eskwad), with Pathé, Lobster Tree and M6 Film as co-producers. The music was composed by six-time Academy Award-nominated composer Alexandre Desplat ("The King’s Speech", "Argo"). The German authority for evaluating and rating films (Deutsche Film- und Medienbewertung FBW), gave the film the highest possible rating: "particularly valuable", and praised the film for being "impressive in every aspect".
Alexander Coridass, President and CEO at ZDF Enterprises: "We are delighted to be involved in this fantastic project, both as purchaser and distributor of the rights in the German-speaking region. Within our group of companies, we are able to successfully acquire and market TV rights and, whenever an appropriate opportunity presents itself, DVD, theatrical and VoD rights. We are looking forward to further exciting cinema projects with Studio Hamburg Enterprises."
