Filming starts for the “History of Violence” (10x50') documentary series looking at the history of weapons
Worldwide distribution of the exciting STORY HOUSE production with ZDF Enterprises
Filming has started in the U.S., Germany, Denmark und the Ukraine for the “History of Violence” documentary series. The ten-part series produced for ZDF Enterprises and ZDF.info by Storyhouse Productions – which has received many accolades internationally for its productions – shows how weapon technology has developed whilst also causing other areas of civilisation to advance at the same time. The captivating description of the history of weapons from the Stone Age through to the high-tech age illustrates the historical significance of weapons and the history of violence, brought to life with elaborate experiments, dynamic reenactment scenes and sophisticated CGI.
Each episode presents three different weapons, whose invention and deployment on the battlefield has had a significant influence on warfare and has thus also shaped the history of mankind. World-renowned experts build, test and compare the weapons for us in complex experiments - be it in the largest genuine Middle Age village of Northern Europe, at a US-american shooting range, a military training area in the Ukraine or the Black Sea. Five international scientists from the fields of archeology, psychology, medicine, military history and physics comment on their respective specialist perspectives and clarify the bigger picture to the viewer. They put weapons in context with the great social developments of their respective epochs and explain their significance.
Inspired by the 3D optics known from the world of computer games, this production gives the audience a very real sense of being directly involved in what is happening. The production is due for release in mid-2018.
Jens Afflerbach and Carsten Obländer are the producers of this series for Story House Productions. ""History of Violence" is historic knowledge television, but based in the here and now." (Jens Afflerbach). "Whilst the experiments are the central element of the series, we do not forget the number of victims caused by the ever more sophisticated weapon technologies. This is underlined by surprising facts such as "more humans were killed by a Kalashnikov than by weapons of mass destruction." (Carsten Obländer).
Ralf Rückauer, Vice President ZDF.factual at ZDF Enterprises: “From the use of spears as early as 330,000 BC right through to a perspective on today’s weapons such as drones, this series most impressively depicts the importance of weapons – not only for their actual purpose, but also for the history of mankind as a whole. How have medieval siege weapons influenced the appearance of our cities today? Why is our spatial perception still based on the fact that our ancestors hunted with spears? These and many other questions will be answered in this exciting documentary series, and we are delighted about this enhancement to our sales catalogue.”
