ZDF Enterprises is responsible for world sales
Mainz, 6th June 2017
From the German economic miracle to the present: ZDF has just started filming a German-Italian family history in Munich and in Italy, under the working title "Bella Germania" (3x90’). ZDF Enterprises will be responsible for world distribution outside the ZDF rights. As a cross-generational epic, the three-part feature follows the first Italian guest workers, in the 1960s, on their journey from foreign guests to the familiar neighbours in today’s Germany. The protagonists tell of their search for identity, love, and a home, and of the expectations and disappointments along the way.
Natalia Belitski (Julia), Christoph Letkowski and Joachim Bissmeir (Ottokar), Stefan Kurt and Kostja Ullmann (Vincenzo), Andrea Sawatzki and Marleen Lohse (Tanja), Silvia Busuioc (Giulietta), and Denis Moschitto and Alessandro Bressanello (Giovanni)stand infront of the camera. Directed by Gregor Schnitzler, the screenplays were written by Daniel Speck. Speck also wrote a novel with the same title based on the screenplays.
Munich: Ottokar suddenly comes into the life of ayoung fashion designer, Julia, and astonishes her by introducing himself as her grandfather. He hopes to get in touch with Julia’s father, Vincenzo. A strange family history opens up for the young woman: Ottokar fell in love with Giulietta in the fifties. Vincenzo was conceived after a single night of love. However, Giulietta gave in to the pressure of her family, left Ottokar, and married the auto mechanic Enzo (Deniz Baser). When the marriage failed, Giulietta took Vincenzo and went to live with her brother Giovanni, in Munich. Like her granddaughter many years later, Giulietta designs, sows and dreams of a professional life in Germany. The chance that the young Italian will meet Ottokar again is not something that she leaves up to chance. And although he has a family, they both want a new startin life. But on the way to Venice, Giulietta dies in a tragic car accident, whilst Ottokar survives. Enzo is suspected of having sabotaged the car. The truth about his father drives Vincenzo mad, and he cuts off all contact with Ottokar.
“Bella Germania” is a ZDF-commissioned production by Bavarian TV Production GmbH (producer: Ronald Mühlfellner). Editing at ZDF is handled by Alexander Bickel and Beate Bramstedt. Filming will go on until October 17th, 2017. The ZDF broadcasting date has not yet been fixed.
